Here it is at 8:15 am this morning. My driveway is clear so I will be going to my other applique group this morning.
I am member of two guilds in our area and we combined them both this past Monday night and brought in John Flynn to speak to our guilds. Mr. Flynn started out in the construction business and then in the 80's when things when downhill he took up quilting to help relieve stress. His wife is a quilter and he would hand quilt her quilts. Jokingly he said she was too slow at making the tops so that is when he took up quilting.And the rest is history. We had some wives bring their husbands and I am sure they were entertained because Mr. Flynn is a pretty funny guy. He was happy to see the men out in the audience too.

And here it is again. Interesting, isn't it? Look hard and you can see the double wedding ring design.
Mr. Flynn is known for his laser cuts pieces for quilt tops. Here is the storm at sea that is laser cut. This is what he taught in the workshops. I did not take the workshop because I have made a storm at sea wallhanging several years ago. This quilt is a miniature maybe 18"x 24", not sure the exact measurements.
Here is another of his quilts. Mr. Flynn says everyone should have a patriotic quilt. It was a very entertaining night and he made us laugh a lot.

ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog and leaving such a nice comment about my penny rug progress. I was at a local quilt show several years ago and Mr. Flynn was there doing a demo of his quilt frame. He does really nice quilting and he seems like a very nice man - very down to earth.

ReplyDeleteI really think Scott would go with me to something like this too. Most of the time he goes with me to the Bernina Shop. And after all these years of sewing, he now takes me to quilt and fabric shops whenever we travel. I take my "Quilt Companion" travel book and we're good to go...
And today, I have to find Campsites near Sisters, Oregon because we'll be there in July. YIPPEE
He's fun to listen to - very entertaining and knowledgable.

ReplyDeleteI took two classes from John Flynn many years ago. He is an interesting guy. One of the ladies in the class asked him how much money he was making as a quilter. He said something to the effect that it was enough to buy a Cadillac.

ReplyDeleteI had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Flynn for a "Quilters World" magazine article in 2005. I find it fascinating how well engineers can make quilts. They have some special place in their brains that make quiltmaking easy, yet precise.
