Happy Thanksgving!

Thanksgiving is almost here and I am sure that quilting and crafting have slowed down at your house as they have at mine. I have started working on Kaaren's latest design. I traced 2009 on it so I need to get it done this year. I considered using variegated thread like she did but I could not find any. I saw this shiny floss and I thought I would give it a try. It is 100% rayon and it is very slippery. I like how it looks but is is a little tricky to work with.
Here are two more siggies that I got in the mail recently.
**********************************************************
I would like to wish you all a Blessed Thanksgiving! As our country is going through a lot of stuff we still have so much to be grateful for in our lives. I was reading a devotion this morning and it talked about how researchers found that grateful people report higher levels of positive emotions, more satisfaction with life, and more vitality and optimism. So take time to count your blessings and you will have a grateful heart. Enjoy your Thanksgiving and I will talk to you in December.

Another Sewing Caddy

Look what I whipped up this weekend. I made another sewing caddy on Saturday afternoon. I made this for my future daughter-in-law for Christmas. She doesn't sew but I think a person could use this for a variety of things. I am going to fill the pockets up with little goodies so she will have to search the whole caddy for little surprises.
Some of you might remember this yellow milk glass cup and saucer I found at an antique store this summer. This will be going in the caddy too. You probably figured out that my soon to be DIL likes bright yellow.
So now I need to go shopping for more goodies.

Different projects!

I finished the October block designed by Dorothy Baker. If you haven't gotten the November block, it is now available.
I am caught up with the Vicksburg BOM that Dawn is sharing over at Linen Closet Quilts. The rest of the blocks are applique which I look forward to making.
I am working on getting this quilt bound. I will show the whole thing and tell you story about this quilt when I finish.

Christmas Wish

My Christmas Wish quilt is done. Just in case you have not seen these embroidery blocks before you can go over to Gail Pan's blog and get these patterns. I really enjoyed doing these little blocks.
This quilt will be on its way to my mom who has a December birthday. My mom is a quilter too and I have not ever made her a quilt before. I have made her lots of other crafts but this will be the first quilt.

Some have commented on the border fabric. It is from Moda and it is called Holly Jolly Snowmen. I just got it this year. The gold fabric is new this year too. It is called Christmas Past also by Moda. The other fabrics were from my stash.
Yesterday I spent some time working on getting pieces ready to sew for my baskets blocks that Anne Sutton is doing. As you can see I am behind. I will probably get the pieces ready for the December block when it comes out and then they will have to wait to get stitched until after Christmas.
No, I did not win this magazine but I know a lot of you have. Congratulations! to you all. I just went out to Joanns yesterday and bought my own magazine. Besides all the pieced blocks there are some great applique blocks in this magazine too.

I've got Snail Mail!

As many of you know who live on the the Eastern side of the United States we were dealing with Tropical Storm Ida. We got tons of rain and lots of wind. This is how we spent our Thursday night. Somewhere down the line the power was interrupted probably by a fallen branch and we were without power for awhile. So that meant no internet. So I couldn't read my favorite blogs.
Friday I was busy all day cooking and getting ready to have my oldest son and his wife over for dinner so I did not get on the computer much that day. On Saturday morning I tried to get on the internet but no connection. So my husband called and sat for a half hour talking to someone trying to figure out why we did not have a connection. The person on the phone did figure out the problem was on their end so they were going to send someone out on Sunday afternoon. Now we are hooked up again.

In the mean time since I couldn't read all my favorite blogs I was getting snail mail from them instead. This first photo is from Diane who is a new blogger. I introduced you all to her several weeks ago. She was so sweet to send these lovely goodies to me for introducing her blog to you all. Now that was just so very kind. Thanks so much Diane. Have a great time blogging and I hope you make lots of new friends.
I was blessed at winning another giveaway. This one was from Brenda's. Look at all these fat quarters. These are the most I have ever gotten at one time. They are beautiful. Thanks so much Brenda. I love them all.

Cindy was doing some one day giveaways and I won one of hers too. I just love this pattern. And look at those charms. Very pretty.
And it is looking a little like Christmas too. Cindy also sent one of her cute little ornaments and the deer post it notes. I will need those to jot down the gifts my kids want for Christmas. Thanks so much Cindy for the lovely giveaway.
And one more package came in the mail. My red and aqua disappearing nine patch blocks. Jane was having a swap and I joined. So many different fabrics. It was fun looking through them all. Thanks Jane for letting me join in the fun.
Well, it certainly feels like Christmas with all the packages that came in the mail. Won't be long before it will be time to decorate. Now I am going to catch up on reading my favorite blogs.

Gadget!

I own a Viking sewing machine and when I am doing straight line quilting I use my walking foot. Instead of having to mark lines with a marker of some kind on my quilt top I use this handy dandy gadget that attaches at the back of the walking foot.
On the border of my Christmas quilt I figured out how much space I wanted between the lines of quilting. I then adjust the foot that follows the previous line I quilted. As I sew my eye follows the gadget going along the line not the foot. Saves a lot of time not having to mark the top.
I did get the top all quilted yesterday. I hope to get the binding on tonight and then have it sewn by this weekend.

Saving My Back!

Sullivan's Quilt Basting Spray. Have you tried it yet? I have used this spray many times on small quilts and one large quilt. I have used it when I machine quilt and hand quilt. I have not had any problems with it gumming up the needle. I try not to spray it too thick so maybe that is why I haven't had problems.

To save my back I take the layers to my garage and tape the backing to wall with the purple paint tape. Next I spray the basting spray lightly on the back and then smooth on the batting. Then I spray the batting lightly and add the top. By taking it out to the garage I also keep the smell out of my sewing room and any sticky spray that might float around from landing on any other surfaces.
Then I take it back to my sewing room to make sure all the wrinkles are out on the back and on the front before I start quilting. This is my Christmas Wish quilt. I want to get it quilted before I show you the whole thing which I hope to get done this week.
This past weekend my husband and I spent the weekend at one of our friend's house along with 10 other couples to help them build a deck. It was a great weekend hanging out with these very good friends of ours. In between times helping with the cooking for the men I worked on this bush on my Sweet Nostalgia block. Dorothy said she got a little carried away on her original design and didn't draw many leaves on the pattern. I decided to get a little carried away too.

Siggies and Two Finishes!

I have been very busy but I don't have a lot to show for it. At least not many quilty things. I did
finish a quilt top that I am making for my oldest son and his wife for Christmas. I got it to the
long arm quilter so I should get it back in time to get the binding on it. I will show it when it is all
done.
I have been busy picking out fabrics for my A Tisket, A Tasket blocks. I have four to do. Once I
get all the pieces prepped they will sew up pretty fast.
I am also working on some Christmas projects even though it is hard for me to really think about
Christmas at this time. I have been inspired by all you other gals who are working on Christmas
gifts.
I will show you a few more international signature blocks I have received lately. I can't wait to get
my other signature blocks and my red and aqua blocks soon.
Two more little dresses from Nanette's pattern.
And one more free BOM from Crabapple Hill.

Applique Group

My other Applique group met this week and I thought I would show you what the ladies are up too.
A BOM from "Birds of a Feather" made by Paula.
This bag and block were made by Carol.
The little birdie box, pin cushion, and note pad holder was made by Linda. The notepad holder is made from some fabulous feed sacks. And check out the covered button.

These two blocks were made by Carolyn.
I showed this one as a top last month. Kathleen got it back from the her quilter, Rosemary. So I wanted to share the quilt again. They both do such fabulous work. This is wool on flannel.
If you have a second go over to Fabric Therapy and check out this block. Teresa is working on the Civil War Bride Quilt and I just love her farmer block.
Giveaway Alert! Mary is giving away a simply fabulous finished quilt on her blog. Check it out!
Don't forget to check out Kaaren's new Free Friday design today. So cute!

Coloring on Fabric Tutorial

A week or so ago I showed my first "Sweet Nostalgia" block I had finished. I have decided to color mine. Some of you that read my blog asked how I go about doing the block. I am going to explain the process today.
One thing I am doing is reducing my block size. I have reduced it by 75% so that I will have a smaller quilt. My block comes out to be about 7 inches square. After I reduce it I iron on a piece of freezer paper to the back of the fabric. I don't have a light box but my sewing machine extension table works great with my Ott light underneath. I use a brown Micron 005 Pigma pen to trace on the design.
When I am done tracing I take my Crayola crayons and start coloring. I will check the thread colors that are listed to try to match the crayon color. If you look at the block below you will see that I color dark and light. It will depend on the look that you are wanting. You could do shadowing too. Use your imagination. I have written down the names of the crayons I use for some things like the skin and hair color.
You might have noticed something just a little different in my picture. I took out the witch, even though it was very cute. I had my daughter draw an owl because we have lots of owls in our woods.

When I get done coloring I pull the freezer paper off the back. I place a paper towel on my ironing board, then place the block coloring side down on the paper towel. I will take my iron which is set on "cotton", no steam and slowly press the square so that excess crayon will go onto the paper towel.

Here you can see the block folded back and the paper towel on the right side with black crayon from the cat and dog. The other colors are so lightly colored that they don't go on the paper but they are set in the fabric.

After I finish setting the crayon I will iron on some light weight interfacing on the back. I will start in the center of the block and iron out to the edge. I find if I iron it this way I don't get all those wrinkles in the fabric. I use the interfacing to add some stability and it helps with thread tails not bleeding through to the front.

So now you are ready to start the stitching which really brings the block to life.

If you go over to Mama T's you can see her quilt that she colored a couple years ago. I asked her about washing a quilt that is colored. She said that if you are going to make a quilt that will be washed a lot you might want to color the design with more layers of crayon. So you color, iron, color, and iron again. So far I have only made quilts that will be wallhanings and not washed a lot from use. It really is a fun technique and who doesn't love a new box of crayons!

Edit:I did a lot of experimenting with fabric and crayons before putting out my sock monkey book and monster book patterns out there........ Best results for keeping color through washing is to PREWASH fabric to be colored to remove sizing so the the color penetrates the threads the best. Then proceed as you have with heat setting etc. They all will fade about 50% but is about as good as it gets so depends on how hard you color. NOTE: real HEAVY coloring also ends up with faint greasy marks from the wax when you heat set it. Some of it washes out but not all. Just thought I'd let you know in case you want to do something other than a wallhanging.
amother note: "washable" crayons are permanent after heat set too.
