Before I show the garden where I have been spending most of my days, I wanted to show you the baby Cardinals have hatched. You have to look close. The photo on the left shows the babies sleeping and the photo on the right show them with their beaks open waiting on food.
Ever since the first of the month I have not really done any sewing. A few stitches here and there on my Hop To It block and finishing my Bingo card. It is a busy time for me in the garden. I just had to show you this box I got the other day. Read the side of it. Cute! Inside were three different cone-flowers. I can not wait for them to bloom.
Well, here are some photos of my garden. I will just let you read what is on the photos to see what I have growing so far.
I have had fresh salad several times from the different varieties of lettuce growing. The white sheets are row covers to keep the bugs off the new seedlings.
I love to go up to the garden in the morning and just sit on the bench.
All those little peat pots were divided up and put in the garden yesterday. All the beds are full of veggies and flowers. We have a few more beds to make for the rest of the seeds we want to plant.
Here is one of the pathways my husband made to garden.
I almost forgot about the bed with the beets. I have never grown beets before. My husband wanted to give them a try. I have only eaten the beets that you get at a salad bar. If anyone has any good recipes I would love for you to share them with me.
The deer fencing is on the way. While I was out there yesterday I heard and saw a deer going past the garden. When I moved it snorted at me and took off. I sure don't want deer, raccoon, possum, or bunnies in my garden after all the hard work we have been doing. The joys of living in the country, sort of, we are really just out the city limits but we sure do see a lot wild animals on our little bit of acreage.
Now I think I am going to go sew since I am caught up in the garden. Yay!

Gosh, Carrie, I am in awe of your garden! The little cardinals look so healthy - if that's a sign for your plants, then you're going to have a bumper crop! Would love to know what Bruce used for the hoops over your covered beds!

I'm very envious of your garden. Once upon a time, I grew lots of vegies. I know it's a lot of work!! Good job! Sweet baby birds. It'll be fun to watch them grow and fledge about!
I wish I liked to garden. I am envious of people with wonderful flower & vegetable gardens. I have no luck or patience for gardening. And now my back and legs could not take it.
Awww baby birds! I've never seen cardinals that little. I wish we could put in vegetables (and roses).
We have many large trees and get very little sun.

The babies are so precious, wonderful to have them hatch in your yard. I have two sets of cardinals that come to the feeder, not sure where they nest.
I love your garden, really nice layout and keeping it natural looking, but functional. I just dig holes and throw the plants in, lol.

Gosh no wonder you haven't had much time for sewing - you have had a really busy time in the garden - and great that you are able to enjoy fresh produce already. It sounds like you have hungry, active wildlife... I'm losing a few apples to a possom at the moment so must set a trap. That sure is an imaginative label on the box!!
Lots of tasty things! Too cold to play here still. Last week we had 4 deer stroll across the back of our fence. They are pretty bold. I live in a neighborhood with lots of houses.

Envious of the progress in your gardens...you are so much farther ahead than we are here in the Northwoods. But like you, the outside calls very strongly now and sewing has fallen into the background somewhat...thank goodness for evenings when one can put their feet up after being outside most of the day and maybe do a little stitching.
Wonderful garden photos Carrie! Tomorrow I get to spend the whole day in the garden and I hope all the tiny butterflies are still around, they must be passing through, I have never seen them before.
Wow you are going hard at it - that is a ton of work Carrie, and I can totally understand not wanting the local wildlife to come around eating everything! We're in the city, but when there are apples on our tree out front, the deer are there too.

Great pictures, Carrie! You are quite the city farmer, aren't you? I really appreciate your morning view-from-the-bench. Trying to understand the layout, I think your view includes the back of the neighbor's house right? That isn't your own place in the background? The mulch stepping path to the garden is very nice. It's all going to look even more fabulous when everything is in full growth. All I know about garden-grown beets is that I love eating them pickled! That's always what my Grandma did. And now, since I'm the only one in the family who likes them, I only get to eat the salad bar variety. Reap and enjoy the fruits of your labors.

As to beets, i am not a fan of boiled beets, tho others are; however, i love roasted beets! To roast, i cut off all but @ 2 inches of the greens @ scrub thoroughly. Then I wrap 3-6 beets in a foil pocket & throw in the oven to roast with whatever else is cooking, often chicken. The temperature, as long as no higher than 425 doesn't really matter. Depending on size & fresness, i allow 40 minutes to an hour, they are very forgiving. I use a skewer to test if they are soft. Take them out, let them cool a bit & use cloth or papertowels to slip them out of their skin. I usually just eat as is. But they are wonderful cold in creme friache, fresh dill & fresh horseradish. Yum! They look like jewels! Beets are silly expensive in the store, so i too grow them. Happy spring! B

Oh Carrie, I am soooo jealous of your cardinals!! I have wanted a cardinal in my yard FOREVER!!! I have a neighbor about a mile away that has one and I told her I was putting out extra feeders to try and steal hers!
Lots of gardening going on around here too, wow, you guys have a FABULOUS garden. We have beets/lettuce and potatoes too! Our problem is the wild rabbits hopping up and through our fence to nibble away at all our hard work too.

You'll have to let me know if you find any good beet recipes. I keep getting beets in my produce box and I don't really have any go-to recipes for them. I did find a yummy Cooking Light recipe for Two Potato and Beet Hash with Poached Eggs and Greens which I thought was delicious-- but definitely not an every-day kind of dish for us.
