Dresden Plate Bandwagon

Yes, I have joined the bandwagon to make a Dresden Plate quilt. When I got the DS fabric from Stephanie I decided it was time. I started cutting out using this ruler.
One thing I will tell you about the wooden thing that comes with the package. Notice it is not very pointy and it will not work. So if you buy one of these packages make sure you look at that wooden point. I have one of these rulers and another wooden gadget with the tip that is very pointy which I used. For some reason I found the wood thing but not the ruler so I had to buy another one. I think you could sand it down if it was not as pointy as you would like or use something else to get the point the way you want it.

I am making 8" Dresdens. I am not using a quilt pattern but I have an idea how I want to make this quilt. I am going to put these Dresdens on some DS goldish/yellowish background fabric and I will use the same fabric for the centers. I need a couple more of the DS fabrics to complete these. So I will be on the look out for something to go with these, hopefully some more DS fabrics. This is not sewn together yet.

Applique Group Show and Tell

Here is the show and tell I promised. Every block I make to add to my quilt makes me like it more and more. Aren't these blocks great? Check out the bees on the top right block.

Sashing

The last few days I have been working on the sashing for my Hop To It blocks. I got directions last month so that I could begin adding the sashing as I create each block. There will be sashing on top and bottom of each block row. Just haven't got that far yet. The applique group is meeting this morning. More show and tell coming next post.

Hopes and Dreams Quilt Challenge for ALS

Last Thursday the Applique Addicts got together for our monthly meeting. Not much show and tell this time.
Susie did bring some beautiful blocks she has been working on.
Last year I donated a quilt for the Hopes and Dreams Quilt Challenge for ALS-Lou Gehrigs disease. Quilters Dream Batting is sponsoring this challenge. There are prizes for different categories but I did not send a quilt for that. I just wanted to donate to a worthy cause.

I got a new entry form for this year and I presented the idea of making a group quilt to the ladies of the applique bee.
I chose the block on the left from this book. I made kits for 6 of the ladies who said they would be willing to make a block.
You might remember this photo from a few weeks back...

which became this beautiful lap quilt. I put the quilt together and did the machine quilting. I wish I had a passion for machine quilting as much as I do for applique. I still think it turned out pretty well and all the ladies who made blocks like it too. So it will be going in the mail this week even though I would love to keep it. lol

A big thank you to Shelia, Susie, Susan, Patti,(made 2 blocks) Marlene, and Beverly for helping me with this project. You ladies are the best!!!!

I also wanted to share a tip about the book that I got the pattern from. Because the book has patterns on both sides of the page I took the book to a printer and had the spine cut off. I also had them punch holes so that it would go in a three ring binder. Now the page is much easier to trace or put through my copier so that I can use the pattern.

Pretties!

Here is my newest Hop To It block. All clean and pressed. Remember a few posts back I mentioned using foam board to get the pattern symmetrical? Mandy has taken it one step further and has made a sand paper board on the other side. A sand paper board is a great tool to use when tracing around templates while it is on your fabric. The sand paper keeps the fabric from slipping around. Check out Mandy's tutorial here. Thanks for sharing Mandy.
