So I decided to create my own design and finally got around to using these hoops that I won from Candace a while back. Boy, this sure is easier on my body than having to hold the hoop. This sits in my lap so that way my shoulders don't get so tense.
Here is the finished product. My husband sanded it and got rid of the imperfections. He read in one of his woodworking magazines about using shoe polish to finish wood items. So that is exactly what he did and I really like how it turned out.
Now I hope someone can answer a question for me. I went to a flea market on Saturday. I saw these two paddles. As you can see both sides have grooves and when put together they match. I don't know if that means anything or if they are just identical paddles.I thought the smooth side would make a great place to display some punchneedle. Does anyone have any idea what these were used for? This curious mind wants to know.

I think the paddles are butter pats. They were used for shaping blocks of butter.

Yep, butter paddles. Carding paddles have tiny little wires on them. I have used both in the past.
Those are butter pats! I bought a few when i lived in The Netherlands.

I wonder if the paddles are for rolling gnocci on -- an Italian pasta. I've seen them rolled on the tines of a fork but wonder if that's what the paddles are used for. It seems strange that there is a pair of them though.

Oh Carrie, I vividly remember Grandma had one of these match holders hanging in their house. I haven't seen one in years. How fun! And the way you and hubby have refinished it is wonderful. Great job!

The match stick holder turned out lovely! I love refinishing old things. Found a wonderful find the other day, a little table for my quilting room, that someone set out for the garbage. Why do people throw out beautiful old wood furniture and replace it with plastic or fake wood pieces, very sad. I'm watching for a nice day, so I can take it outside and strip it down.

Cool butter paddles. I have no idea how they were used. I know you have to squeeze out any excess buttermilk from the butter after it's made. Maybe that is what they are for--or not.
Aren't those hoops nice? I have the same pair and love how they disassemble to be used individually or as you are. They are what I use for all hand quilting. Glad to read the answer to your question is butter paddles. I never would have guessed.
