Our first destination was Tennessee. We got up at 4am and headed out. I slept in the back seat until sunrise and then it was my turn to drive. We did not stop too many times because our first trip was going to be 800 miles. Oh! Tennessee is a wide state. It seemed like forever before we got to...
Next state, Oklahoma! OOOOk-lahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain! Have you ever watched the movie Oklahoma? If you have you remember part of this lyric from the song. Well, let me tell you while we drove across the whole state the wind blew for every mile we drove. One stop we did make which was recommended by a friend was to see the the memorial from the bombing in Oklahoma City in1995. It was very moving and when I saw the statue of Jesus with his face covered and the saying at His feet, "And Jesus wept", I started to cry myself.
Next state is Texas. We only traveled through the panhandle which was flat, dry, windy, and hot. See the car thermometer, 106 degrees. When we got to the KOA camp ground in Amarillo it was 102 degrees. It really wasn't too bad because of the wind and it wasn't humid. Here is my hubby setting up the tent. By morning the next day it was 58 degrees and we woke up to a beautiful sunrise.
Here are some images from Texas. We stopped to get gas and I saw the guy with the spurs on his boots so I had to get a photo of them.
Next state we traveled through was New Mexico. So many different land formations. I really like New Mexico. It was really windy and the temperature stayed in the 70's the whole time. I asked a waitress at one of our stops if it was windy a lot and she said that it was only like that during May and June. The landscape was really hazy looking in certain areas along the highway because of the soil being blown about. We were told it was like talc. Real fine.
We went through Albuquerque, New Mexico on Interstate 40. All along the highway the bridges, overpasses, and the sides of the overpasses were pieces of art work. It really was a beautiful city.
When we got to Arizona we stopped to see the Meteor Crater. It was the one thing my husband really wanted to see. Oh man! was it cold! and winds gusts up to 45 mph. I almost got blown over several times. It really was awesome to see it.
These are the San Francisco mountains. It was so awesome to see these.
We did find two quilt shops. The photo on the left is Odegaard's Sewing Center in Flagstaff. The photo on the right is another shop in Williams, Arizona called Quilter's Mercantile on Route 66. Both shops had a great selection of fabric. The plan for tomorrow is to go back to the Grand Canyon. We were told the weather would be better. But it won't matter what kind of weather it is because we will be leaving the next day so we have to go. If you want to see where we go next you will just have to come back to read my blog. Forgive me for if I don't answer comments but you can see why. Pretty busy...
Seeing the USA,

How funny. We are heading out on June 27 on your exact route, lol. We're driving to California to visit my son, and will be taking 40 west all the way until we get to route 15 in Cal. We're also going to stay 2 nights in Flagstaff, and are taking a guided (moderate)hike in the Grand Canyon as well as driving through Monument Valley. Too bad we didn't do this at the same time, lol. Have fun!! I didn't know about that crater.....
Happy Anniversary! Isn't it amazing how the scenery changes from state to state? So many wonderful places to see in the US.
How fun Carrie!!! If you come back through Oklahoma, there are two terrific shops that you should take time out for. Can't wait to see where you are headed next.
Happy Anniversary!! I have to say though.. a tent!! If I had slept in a tent.. I wouldn't have been too happy getting up in the morning LOL.. I'm younger (guessed by the years married).. but the body wouldn't have liked the sleeping on the ground! Enjoy your trip :)
Have fun Carrie!!!! Sounds like a fun getaway...though lotsa driving and oooooooooo gas prices. When do you get back?
Oh you lucky people, I LOVE road trips!! I'll be following along :o) The time I took my son to see the Grand Canyon it was a beautiful day but by the time we left it was getting cloudy and the whole canyon filled with clouds, it was really cool to watch.

Carrie, your trip brought back so many memories of the times we drove to the Grand Canyon. There are few places as beautiful. I hope you get a good day and do try to take the trolly out to the south most point to see the one lodge there. It is such a beautiful place and even if it were snowing. By the way we are in Oklahoma and the wind does come sweepin' down the plains. There are so many places to go out there I wish I could list them for your trip back. My DH also had to see that crater. Such a great trip - I feel like I am right there with you.
Hugs - Marie
Happy Anniversary Carrie! We are just three years ahead of you. I guess both of our hubbies robbed the cradle ;-) Love the pictures. Thanks for taking us along.
Congratulations on your anniversary.
What a wonderful way to celebrate it.
I'll look forward to reading your posts and seeing all the wonderful photos of your travels.
Happy Anniversary!
Road trips are fun, love to explore new places.
I hope the weather clears up so you can enjoy the views, hard to imagine snow still.

Wow. I've never been to Tennessee. I've not really traveled much in the south. It is on my "someday list". Thanks for posting the pics.
Sounds like fun so far, Carrie - except for the snow! What a wonderful 35 year anniversary adventure!
Cheers!
Congrats on 35 years! Wow, it's hard to find someone who actually stays together that long. Kudos to you and the Mister! And what a trip?! Thanks for sharing with us.
I wondered where you've been! Enjoy your trip, we love road trips too. Happy anniversary!! We have almost a year on you, we will celebrate 36 on the 24th!
Happy Anniversary Carrie,
The next time you go to New Mexico make sure you check out the White Sands Monument. It is an amazing beautiful part of the world to visit.
You are travelling around the area of your country I love to visit. Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado...makes me want to hop in the car and try and meet up with you.
Check out Bryce Canyon if you have time. My favourite canyon in that part of the world.
Cheers,
Sandi in New Westminster B.C.
