Passing down the Love of Quilting

Do you have family members who quilt? Did you learn to quilt from one of them? My mother got me started with the tools of quilting. From then on I took off  making my own creations. Her mother taught her to quilt. Now I have handed down the love of quilting to my daughter. My daughter who is twenty six years old just finished this quilt recently. I bought these blue fat quarters for her a couple Christmases ago. She did not want to cut them up so she came up with this design on her own. She did straight line machine quilting and she did the binding too. A very modern looking quilt.

 She decided to pull out her other quilts that she had made to take some pictures so I thought I would share them with you. This quilt she made in 2003. It is all flannel and every piece is different. A charm quilt.

This one she made in 2002. She went with me to a fabric store and saw this jester fabric and had to have it. This is what she created.

 In 2001 she made this quilt using the dolphin fabric. Her own creation again.

 And this nine patch quilt was her very first one she made in 1999. She was thirteen. Another of her own creations using my scraps. She was inspired by a  watercolor quilt my mom had made for me.

I am pretty proud of her creations. I hope you enjoyed seeing this mini quilt show.

September Free Motion Challenge

September brings a new free motion challenge. This month SewCalGal presented  Paula Reid. Paula is the owner of Batts In the Attic. Paula has made several DVDs on machine quilting. She also created something called Batt Scooters which help you to grip the quilt as you do your machine quilting.

Our challenge this month was to do this circular feather design. I traced the pattern onto tulle using the technique I learned from Don Linn. Then I traced it onto my quilt with blue water erasable pen. After doing the quilting I wished I had used some other way to mark the design because I had a hard time seeing the pen on some of the fabrics.

I then decided how I should do this section. I drew some arrows to show which way would work best for me. Then I practiced on paper several times but with the design on the quilt I didn't feel like I needed to work on paper very long.

I quilted the design on a preemie baby quilt in pink thread.

I also did some straight line quilting. This photo shows the quilt after being washed.

Here is the back side. Not too bad. I would have never attempted this design last year but because of these challenges I have been doing I definitely feel more confident.

Here you can see all the feather circles and the straight line quilting on the washed back side of the quilt.

Can't really see it on the front but I know it is there.

This is another preemie baby quilt I did earlier using some of  the past challenges on it.

So these two preemie quilts are done and will be delivered to our local hospital some time soon for new babies.

Bee In My Bonnet Row Along

I spent yesterday afternoon making the butterflies for the second row of Lori Holt's row along. I wanted to make sure I got those triangle sections around the wings just right. I didn't want to have to redo them so I really took my time but still had to redo a few. I like how mine turned out. There is a flickr group and lots of people are using bright fabrics. I just went through my stash and picked out some earth tones because that is what I really like best. It will be fun to see what Lori has created for the third row.

Using my Stash

As quilters we talk about using fabric from our stash all the time. Lori Holt from Bee in My Bonnet is having a mystery row scrap quilt along. I went through my stash and picked out some of my favorite fabrics and made my first row.  The way Lori shows how to make this row is so cool. Even if you don't do the row along you should check out this technique. Row two will be coming tomorrow. I can't wait to see what it is. Join in and use some of your stash!

I forgot to show you my only two spaghetti squash from the garden on yesterday's post. Yep! just these two but I am glad for them.
