Mini Vacation

Well, I haven't done a whole lot while my husband has been on vacation which has been a good thing because I have been having trouble with my right elbow. "Tennis Elbow" even though I don't play tennis anymore. I was reading Anne's blog and she mentioned getting tendinitis after appliqueing straight for 4 weeks. The pain has been so great at night that when I try to move my arm it brings tears to my eyes. I got on line to read about how to treat it and the first thing it said was to stop doing everything that aggravates the elbow. Okay, that is kind of impossible but I am trying. It means I have not done any handwork and time on the computer has been way down. I am keeping it wrapped and taking anti-inflammatory medicines. I have not been to the doctor but I will go if it does not get better by the end of the month. If you have had this happen to you let me know how you handled the healing process.
So all that to tell you that I will not be blogging everyday but will try to every other day. More pictures than words. I miss it and I will try to read blogs but will not leave comments just because using the mouse and typing hurt my arm. I have switched the mouse to be left handed which is slow going for me.
I want to share the things I have been up to so here goes.
On Monday my husband and I went on a day trip and we stopped at two antiques stores. He found some more old tools and here are a few of the items I found.
I found these napkins in excellent shape. The little cocktail napkins had few pale spots on them. The other table napkins are great too except there are only seven of them but I had to have them.
I also found some bobbins and I wrapped some  ribbons arond them.
The picture is a little blurry but here is an vintage cold cream jar. I love the pink lid.
I got a siggie in the mail yesterday from Rose Marie. Cardinals! and look at the fabric with the little cardinals. Thanks Rose Marie.

I got a little inspired by Belinda who has been spring cleaning. I decided I needed to clean up some. I had already straightened up my stash. All nice and neatly folded again. Last week I bought the black baskets to put different projects in which keeps them from falling off the shelves. I bought these shelves about 10 years ago from Lowes hardware store. I had a real messy pile on top near the books so that got all cleaned up too.
On Tuesday we took another trip to Charlotte and one of the places we stopped was a brand new Ikea store. Amazing!! I bought these little jars. The one on the front right has a mix of buttons. The white ones are some pearl buttons I found at the antique store.

Oh darn, Carrie. I thought you were going to show us the antique tools that your husband bought. NOT! Just kidding.

Don't you just love vintage linen? I have a cold cream jar just like yours and I keep my quilt basting pins in it.

Lovely siggie. I can't wait to start making mine. Maybe later tonight. Right now I'm taking a tea and blog break from making swap gifties.

If you have a heat pad, put that on your elbow. When I had my frozen shoulder, the physio said to apply warm wet heat.

Take care of yourself.

Always a bummer to hear QUILTER DOWN!! LOL I guess you see you'll have to take it easy with it so you can jump right back into your labor of love. Spending a day at old antique shops and lunching with hubby is always a good day...no matter the treasures found or not. We are still trying to find a free day for our IKEA visit. We frequented it often while living overseas. DH had one near his job site while working in VA....here we have it just down the road and haven't been!
Anyway..got off track....get that arm better!!

I hope your elbow heals quickly. I also hope your forced vacation goes quickly... a month is long time to wait for relief, I would go after a week. I'm a bit of a wimp, I guess. Sending healing thoughts and prayers your way.....

Hope you elbow improves soon, I know how hard it would be to give up anything that aggravates it! Your tidy-ed up space looks just great! Love those jars, I guess I need to make a trip to the new Ikea.

Hope you heal quickly. Yes, stop doing the hand work and computer and once healed make sure you are sitting in the right position for both with the right area supported, so it doesn't come right back.

Oh poor dear! I get tendonitis in my wrist and it is very painful when it flares up. Stabbing pain! I immobilze it with a wrist guard for about 10 days and that does the trick. Kinda harder when it is your elbow! Speedy recovery to you!

LOVE your shopping finds, AND your Spring Cleaning

Carrie, I have unfortunately had to have surgery on both elbows from letting the pain go on too long and not taking care of them. The trick is to get the inflammation down so it doesn't do any more damage. The thing that helped the most prior to surgery was cortisone injections. They help almost immediately! My advice is to not wait as long as I did and incur further damage.
On a lighter note - wow - what a great shopping trip! I love the spools - I've begun collecting a few myself!
Cheers!

Carrie I am sad to hear about your elbow. I get alot of pain in my shoulders when I machine quilt which could be why I hate machine quilting so much. I take like you an anti-inflammatory.
I like your siggie. I just signed up too trade siggies too.

Bummer Carrie. Love your new found treasures. I have some of those wooden bobbins too. Isn't IKEA amazing. I'm glad I don't live too close to one.

First off, yes I've had this too. And it occured after marathon applique just like Anne's. Rest, ibuprofen every 4-6 hours several times a day maybe for up to 2 weeks. And then it gets better. Rest rest rest. You don't want permanent damage. And that can happen. But I'm sure it will go away. Then ease back into things.

Darling stuff you've shown here. Love it all. Ahhh the love of vintage.

Get better.

you poor thing...rest, rest and more rest...and lots of ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatories...

believe me when i say i can sympathize with you - i am counting the days until my pinkie gets operated on...

love your finds and love ikea! ☺

Hi Carrie, I had to stop doing everything for a couple of months and then I was afraid to do anything at all for fear it would come back. So painful! You WILL get better tho if you take this time to rest it! Then when you're better, you'll have to make sure and not go back to marathon applique. Keep me posted.

When I first started my on-line store I also got it, sometimes if I cut to many fat quarters it hurts. I canged hands on the computer, at first slow, now I cannot use the mouse in my right only my left hand. i only cut for an hour or so, I use to cut all day. Advil, yes, rest it, I like to use ice, at first it will hurt like crazy them the ice will "freeze" that area, and it helps so much, but like everyone else said rest, SO, DO NOT write me back!! and I hope it feels better soon!

A few years back, I hurt my arms by carrying bolts of material to the checkout and it took a few months before I could lift my arms above my shoulders. BTW .... I got good deals that day! :o)

Hopefully by not doing too much the next wee while you will be able to start sewing again.
I love vintage linens, too. On my next trip to the thrift shop, I aim to do a bit of browing down that aisle.

Not good news Carrie....you must be having huge withdrawals as well....good to know the elbow is going down so what you are doing seems to be helping....it won't be long and you will be back to where you where...take care

Deb said...

Oh Carrie, do take care of your elbow. I have been there, done that with my elbow also and it does need rest. I was naughty and said to myself if I stop I wn't ever be able to get back to things so kept going. Not worth it!! I must admit I had surgery on the elbow and have no problems anymore but that was extreme measures and I am sur I caused it unnecessarily.
I love all of your godies you have bought lately, what gorgeous wee jars for your buttons. We don't have IKEA here in NZ and many times have wished we did.
Take care hun. xx

Looks like you had a successful mini vacation!! I really need to check out an IKEA!!

I'm so sorry to read that you're in distress. Do take care and don't let a temporary problem turn into a permanent one. I can relate, but I can't offer any helpful suggestions :-(

Personally I'm backing off on the ibuprofen and ramping up on the wine as muscle relaxer of choice. Can't sew anyway, might as well sleep!!

Get better quick, don't bother to answer comments either because we want you back in action!

{{{{Carrie}}}}....rest is all that will help it. You gave me such good advice with my own tendonitis in the hand/wrist, and even though it was hard I took every opportunity to rest it. Its the only way for it to heal. My wrist is still a bit sore but I have found that it's when I put weight on it I have the most trouble.
You should probably strap it to keep it from accidentally being used.
Praying a prayer of healing for you. Hugs, Jenny.

Carrie, I hope you feel better soon. I know that's painful, not to mention frustrating to not be able to do handwork.

Now I know I have to go to Ikea. I LOVE those little jars!

I love those sort of jars that you can display things on...now I have to decide if I give up a decade or more of cat posters to have shelves to display things.

Can you bear to part with a cute kitten picture that says
Christ loves me the way I am.
and too much to let me stay that way...
I have two walls of similar.....sobs.
I like display bottle also.

Please don't wait to see your MD. You need physical therapy. Using ice over the area will help alot. Take a couple of 3 ounce Dixie cups, fill them 3/4 full with water and freeze them. Then take one and peel the paper down a bit and use that to massage the ice over the injured area. Do this for about 10 minutes three or four times a day. Once you've seen your MD and had some physical therapy, consider seeking some treatment with a practitioner of A.R.T. which means Active Release Technique (google it for the headquarters and locating a practioner in your area). ART was the ONLY thing that saved my arms. I had it so badly that I couldn't even comb my hair! Email me if you have any questions.

I'm so sorry to hear about your tennis elbow. It's so tough when you have to hold back from doing so many things you enjoy. Hopefully, it will start healing and improving soon!

Your antiquing finds are so wonderful! I love the little teacup napkins and the bobbins! I'm also rather envious of your tidy and organized storage area. It looks great!

Hmmm - so many kind words of advice but how scary to think that we've all suffered the same or similar injuries!! We won't let that stop us though.... Rest, Ice and some laser acupuncture did the trick for me.
Good luck, hope you're mended soon :-)

Hi Carrie,
I received your siggy today thank you and I have put my siggy in the post to you this afternoon.
When I read your blog address I realised I have had you on my favourites list for ages and often look in to see what you are up to. I know exactly what you are going through with your tennis elbow, I have had it and I didn't even play tennis and I agree that total rest is the best thing I ended up having a cortosone injection to finally relieve the pain.Anyway I hope it gets better soon.
