Drunk by Fabric

Have you ever made a drunkard's path block? I have not. As you can see from the diagrams on this sheet of paper there is some curved piecing.
Several years ago I saw a demonstration where you put an applique circle on the background fabric. You can see my register lines going down the center both ways. I match these up before I appliqued the circle on. This is where you would cut the fabric in half both ways.
So here is my first attempt at trying to figure out what size circle I should use. The space where the arrow is should be about 1/2" wide to match the drawing above.
So I made a slightly bigger circle and appliqued it to the background fabric and this time I got it to work out. Now I can begin to pick out the fabrics for my row quilt and get the circles prepped to applique on the backgrounds. I think this will be much easier for me than hand piecing.
Don't forget the "It's for the Birds" blog hop and my giveaway on yesterday's post. And speaking of birds you must go over to the Happy Appliquer and look at her bird quilt. She is not part of the blog hop but her quilt is worth the look. Heather is an inspiration for me when it comes to applique.

Here is the list for today. Have fun bird watching!

The drunkards path is one of my favorite blocks. They really aren't hard. After you sew one or two the rest get easy. Easier and faster than applique. Your block reminds me of a tote I made about 30 years ago when I had just started quilting.

I have not, but have always loved that block and intend to....someday!! Isn't the 'For the Birds' bloghop fun?

I love drunkard's path and tend to shy away from curved piecing, although I have done a NY Beauty Quilt and a Grandmother's Fan quilt. I have a drunkard's path template set and have played with it. I've only sewn curved piecing on the machine, not by hand. Good luck with your new method.

I have made Drunkard's Path blocks the traditional way and the applique circle method you mention. Either can be fun. And there are so many settings you can do with them.

Haha, thanks for the mention. You are an inspiration to me too!

Have you looked at Inklingo for the curves - hashmarks and seam allowances already there for you and a design book for the shapes?
Thanks for the inspiration.

I've never seen the drunkard's path done this way. You always intrique me, Carrie.

I've made one drunkard's path, but using the GO die for it - it was for a wedding gift.

What a great way to make the block, Carrie! I am always challenged by curved piecing, so this takes the struggling out of it!
Cheers!

what a nifty way to make that block. I have always been a bit scared of the curves in the drunkards path. I may try it one day.
love the look at your hexie garden quilt.

One of my UFOs is a Drunkard's Path quilt-- the top is finished and just waiting for quilting (it has been waiting since 1999, I think... eeek!). I did mine by machine with curved piecing. The applique technique looks like a lot of fun though. :)

That's a cool technique! I have not tried it that way.
