While I was Away

It has been a long two months. On November 5 I had shoulder surgery to repair my rotator cuff on my left shoulder. I thought I was going to be in the sling for three weeks but things were worse than I thought so I ended up wearing the sling for 6 weeks. I started physical therapy the first week of December. It was horrible when the therapist moved my shoulder to start the therapy. It was so painful. I didn't cry at therapy but I sure did when I started my therapy at home. I am progressing well. I can now lift my arm to the second shelf in my kitchen cabinets. Being able to type with both hands is really great too.

The weekend before Christmas Mr. P. and I both got the flu so there was no celebrating at our house. We were by ourselves and feeling pretty pitiful. To top it all off our live Christmas tree was infested with some kind of bug that decided to hatch and start crawling around the floor. At least they were slow moving so we were able to kill them and take the tree back outside. We thought freezing weather would kill them but it didn't. We had planned to bring the tree back inside when we did have our family get together but it was still infested.

Last week my son and his wife from DC came home. My other son and his wife, my grandson, and my daughter all got together last weekend to celebrate Christmas together. We had a great time. It was all over way to soon.

So the house is back in order and I am getting back to a more regular routine. So I thought I would share a little bit of what I did do while recuperating from surgery. First, I had to show you some of my fall veggies. These were picked before surgery. I have a bed of carrots still out in the garden. There are two beds covered with plastic to protect some of the cool weather veggies. (broccoli, kohlrabi, cauliflower, and onions)
In my previous post I revealed a table runner that I had made while testing some paper piecing/applique patterns for Missie of Traditional Primitives. The pattern is now available if you are interested. Isn't it wonderful? You can get it here. I am excited to do those applique blocks in the border.
So what is a girl to do when she can't do much but sit around? I did read some blogs and followed some blog hops. I also did a little shopping on the internet. I also watched way to much Netflix on my TV.

I won this package of batiks during the Canadian blog hop.
When I finally could get out and drive I bought this gorgeous yarn to make this cowl.
And I visited a new quilt shop to me and bought these fabrics.
I was finally able to get in my sewing room in time to make this BOM before the meeting this week at the quilt shop.
Oh, and remember I mentioned I was making a rag quilt for my daughter-in-law. Here is it all finished. She loved it. If you go back to this post you can see that I used a rotary cutter that cuts like pinking shears, sort of. Well after I washed the quilt I didn't like the look so I clipped all the edges and washed the quilt again. Much better!
This little guy is now 9 months old. I started watching him again this week. I will only be watching him 3 days instead of 5. He will be going back to the girl who was watching him while I recuperated from surgery. She has a little boy so Damien will be playing with his little 2 year old friend on Thursday and Friday. I will miss him but it will also give me time to sew and do other things while he is at his friend's house.
Thanks so much to those of you who sent emails to see how I was doing. You all are so sweet.

Happy New Year to you all.

With Passion,
Carrie P.

I am glad to hear you are recovering. That is a real shame about your Christmas tree! Your vegetables look gorgeous. My backyard is literally a skating rink and the kids play lots of hockey - no vegetable growing for me for a while.

It's wonderful to have you back, Carrie! I've been through the same surgery, so I know it certainly isn't a piece of cake! Looks like you entertained yourself pretty well, though ;>) I'm glad all is well in your world again!
Cheers!

So glad you are doing so much better. You were missed. That flu was going around. I had a touch of it too. Can't wait to see more of your work. Hugs

I've had you on my mind so much lately, and was hoping to get a moment to write you an email - alas I never remember until I turn the computer OFF. GRRR. The minute I hear it click completely off I remember all the things I meant to do online, lol.

My girlfriend had a tree like that, her first Christmas with her new hubby in their new house - they got it all decorated, started a fire and sat back to admire their hard work. The whole tree started shaking and THOUSANDS of tiny spiders came spilling out of it. The tree went to the curb, new decorations and all. I've had a fake one ever since, and so has she!

I'm sorry therapy is so painful hon, but it does help - I'm glad you can type with two hands now and it's getting better. I love all your purchases [and that Charley Harper fabric, wow!], your new block, and your rag quilt! And of course your adorable little grandson....too adorable for words!!!

I am glad to learn that you are on the mend. I have heard that shoulder surgery of any kind is a hard recuperation.

So you are going to work on The Garden of a King. It is so tempting but I have so many other temptations to work on also. My favorite blocks of the design are the applique blocks on the outer edge.

Welcome back Carrie. So good to see you sewing and posting again.

You made good use of your time recuperating. Very pretty yarn for the cowl and lovely fabrics.

Can't believe your little man is 9 months old already. He is such a cutie and he is probably very happy to be back with you a few days a week.

Take it easy.

Aww, Hugs to you Carrie! And throw one in there for your hubby too! I hope that shoulder does improve much quicker now that you are feeling a bit better! Looks like you had a ball shopping though! How Fun! Good to see you posting again!! (Thanks for the pattern plug!) We have had one live tree since I've been married. It had spider mites!! It was aweful! I feel your pain there... ;-)

Great acquisitions. Glad you are feeling better, I still have carrots in the garden, that we have been picking for the Chickens. Your tree had bugs, my tree smelled like poo. We bought it from a big box store where it was stored inside. My mom thinks that possibly it was the potty tree for the animals around the tree farm and it was absorbed into the tree. Sitting in the water released all the stuff and so my house began smelling like poo. DH and I were going nuts trying to find it and we don't have any animals.

the little guy is so precious!!! and your 'accumulations" are wonderful. shoulder surgery is one of the most painful and I am glad that is behind you. both HH and I are down for the count with a cold virus and are recovering slowly but life keeps moving. Because of my allergies and the fact that we had a tree just like yours...we now have an artificial tree...easy up, easy down. Take care!

Welcome back Carrie - we both have been absent (for different reasons) and I truly hope we both are back to quilting/normal in 2015! I'm sorry to read of your slow recovery and holiday illness on top of that. What an adorable little person to brighten your day! Great projects underway too.

Danien looks like such a little sweetheart! I am glad to hear you are on the mend, physical therapy can be so draining. I hope those bugs on your tree did not spread to anything else! It is so fun shopping on line!

I'm glad you're back and doing better. A really good friend also had that same surgery about 7 weeks ago. So sorry you and hubby had the flu. We went through that 2 years ago. It's so hard when you both have it at the same time!

Carrie, I am so sorry I didn't realise you were going through the surgery for your shoulder. It is great to hear that you are feeling better. It's a very painful recovery that's for sure. Pleased to see that you weren't idle though and managed to let "your fingers do the walking" on the internet and give some things to cheer you up.
Your vegetables look amazing, what is a kohlrabi? Do your coloured carrots taste any different from your normal orange ones? Gosh wee Damien is a real cutie. What a sweet little man.
Take care.

Welcome back to blogland, Carrie! I'm glad to hear that you are recuperating well. Sounds like you had a busy holiday season-- I'm sure that the low points (infested tree? ack!!!) were blown away by the fun family time. :)

Your grandson has gotten so big! Such a cutie.
