You might have noticed that I have a button on my sidebar for the 2012 FMQ Challenge hosted by SewCalGal. I don't want to be just a straight line machine quilter so I took the challenge. The top photo is my first attempt at the free motion quilt challenge.
I first began by watching a video by Leah Day that she showed doing the shapes on the bottom of the piece. She is also hosting a Free Motion Quilting Project.
Next I watched a video by Frances Moore who showed us how to make these leaves. You can see I made notes on my piece.
This one above I just got lost and could not figure out how to fill in the space. UGH!
The photo below is the back of the fabric. I definitely need to practice on my speed so that I don't get this look on the back.
I use this thread which seemed to work fine.
I went to The Quilting and Fiber Art Marketplace this past weekend. It is a show that has 40+ vendors that sell all kinds of quilting and needle art supplies. I decided to get the Supreme Slider which I will use next time I try my hand at the challenge. This was highly recommended by Leah. I can't remember if SewCalGal mentioned it or not. But I am anxious to give it a try. I really need the practice!
It is not to late for you to join the challenge.
With Passion,
Carrie P.

You are doing great with your practice Carrie. I'm thinking I need that slider and LOTS and LOTS of practice.
Great job on your FMQ!!!
I think it looks pretty good Carrie. I got the Supreme Slider for Christmas and am anxious to try it too.
Wow!! Look at you go! I think it is great. Good for you to try new things.
Looking good, Carrie!!! You are smart to take notes. It'll be so helpful in the long run. I have Post-Its allover my studio while I'm working on a quilt. I always forget what I did at the top by the time I get to the bottom! :-)
What great fun. Good luck! And most of all, just have fun.
Looks great Carrie, I think it's just practice, practice, practice. I find myself totally lacking the patience for that! You will love the supreme slider. And what a good idea to take notes along the way.
Way to go, Carrie! Your practice piece is showing great potential. Freemotion quilting seems a lot like applique in that practice is a major key to success. I hope I can make some time to work on my quilting this year too! :)
Practice makes perfect. Your quilt sandwiches look really great. I've never heard of the Supreme Slider. Looking forward to your review.
This is something I really need to work on.
Maybe I need to try the Supreme Slider. I am still a straight line quilter. do you remember which vendor? Just about all the vendors will be in Statesville, too, in two weeks.
Looks quite lovely, Carrie! :)
Congratulations, Carrie! You're well on your way to some awesome quilting! Not bad at all for a first try! I never could get the hang of it on my domestice machine. Can't wait to see your progress!
Cheers!
Looking good so far!
Your looking good from here Ms Carrie! I think you're getting the hang of it. I need to pull another piece out to practice the leaves again this w/e.
Looks great! I am a meander girl... I think about trying other things but it never happens :)
You did a great job, Carrie! Let us know how you like the Supreme Slider. I really need to get one of those too.
Those leaves look very good. Imagine it being on a fabrics with colors and designs. It would be perfect!! I'm impressed by how neat the lines are.
Still wanting to join, but something is stopping me. I think the insecurity and having to take time for it. Lots of time and practice.
Love your little notes - yes, sometimes you get stuck. I just followed my other quilting to get back.
I've been at least doodling my leaves, and I keep getting empty spots too. It will be worse when I get to my machine!
What a great start you've made, Carrie! Good for you to make a commitment to learning how to do this. I too have a Supreme Slider and it DOES help. Personally, I just wish I had the newer size, as it's larger, for longer throat sewing machine beds. Have fun!
Good job, Carrie. Love our little notes along the way!! I haven't gotten brave enough to give it a try. Doesn't help that I'm not at my own machine right now.
Carrie - If that is your first free motion quilting you're doing great and you'll "get" it!! You can try tweaking your top tension (just a teensy bit more at a time) to eliminate the top thread pulling through to the bottom. You'll find a "natural" speed that is most comfortable to you, and then the machine needs to match you, not you to the machine..... well, I think that should be the way it works???? We also liked the Masterpiece threads for the bobbins - it's finer.
