Keeping my Brain Young

I taught myself to crochet some basic stitches about 25 years ago. I thought it might be fun to crochet again. I signed up for a class at one of our local knitting/quilting shops. I bought this fun variegated yarn at the shop and re-learned some basic stitches again. My problem is trying to read the patterns and deciphering all the abbreviations. If you crochet you know what I am talking about.
I have three more classes. Until the class meets again I am supposed to practice. I bought some yellow cotton yarn that I will practice with and save that variegated yarn for something special. Now only if learning something new would keep my body young like my brain!

With Passion,
Carrie P.

Patterns can be tricky, especially for me - I'm left handed so have to read all the charts backward. Plus Australian learn to crochet using English terms which are different to US terns - our treble crochet is your double crochet, for example. So that makes it important to know where the pattern comes from in the first place!

Sorry, I forgot to say: have fun!

I have a granny square afghan that I made in my teens with leftover from my Mom and Grandma but haven't done much since. I've done some knitting in the last 5 years again... so many pretty yarns now - just like fabric!

I've got the same problem, only with knitting. I never learned what the symbols mean, or how to decipher them. Guess taking a class would help

Someday I would love to get back to crochet myself. I bought a relatively easy book LAST year...geez!

If it would keep my body young, I'd finally get serious about learning to knit! I find crocheting so much easier.

Pretty yarn. I have trouble reading the directions too...I"m a show me person so would benefit better from classes than being self-taught!

Love it Carrie. I think as we age, we can only count on our mind being as young as we want it to be. Our bodies seem to have a mind of their own. Dag!

Thinking your work looks very smooth and even - and had to laugh at your comment about keeping the body young too - amen! There must be something in the air this winter - I never learned to crochet but used to knit years ago - got the bug again & have started a little project just to get back into it easily. How do we find extra hours to do it all though?

It looks good! Crocheting has never been my thing, except from granny squares - another UFO! :)

Oh, what fun! I can only crochet the basics, but learned when I couldn't take anything but a crochet hook onto an airplane. I keep a small crochet/knitting project going all the time because it's so much easier to do in a car than sew or embroider. Good for you! Can't wait to see what you come up with!!

I took a class a couple years ago and made a cute doily. Then I took a class to knit socks and was hooked.

Ahh, I have a recommendation for you. Line dancing! I had never tried it until about six months ago, having this awful preconceived notion that you had to wear cowboy boots, a cowboy hat, and put your thumbs in your front pockets! How wrong I was! It's challenging to learn 43 different dance steps, and 65,000 possible routines, while dancing to a waltz or latin music or a polka or the occasional country tune. Line dancing works your body and your brain! I hope you get to try it sometime.

I had to give up crochet - too much arthritis in my hands, but I can knit and embroidery. Go figure! Staying young mentally is reading blogs like yours, which is lovely. As for the body, I don't seem to be in charge of that! Keep trying and will look forward to your results. Judy C

I like to crochet, but I actually prefer to knit, mostly at this time of the year, it is calm and cozy. Your look good, the classes will help you and maybe you'll soon be "hooked"!

It has been so long since I crocheted I think I would need a class too just to figure out those patterns . Have fun and I love that yarn !

You too! I decided this year to learn to crochet. I just love the Infinity Scarves and wanted to make one or two or three…. Once I started looking around the world of crochet I was "hooked" on wanted to learn more. Happy Hooking! :)

My grandmother taught me to crochet basic stitches. I was eight or nine years old. I moved on, school, marriage etc and didn`t crochet for years. I`ve been at it more than 40 years now. Your crochet stitches are very nice. You will do well!

Oh, how fun! Learning to crochet is on my bucket list. But I keep talking myself out of it. I feel like I'm at my crafty limit for the time being! But that yarn.... gorgeous!!! :)
